Surgeon hopes to make a Breakthrough

Professor Mike Dixon, one of the leading breast cancer surgeons at the Capital's Western General Hospital, is taking on the challenge of running the Great North Run in September.

He is running to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer where he is the clinical lead at the Edinburgh Research Unit.

Many runners for Breakthrough have survived breast cancer, but Prof Dixon has decided to take on this challenge himself to raise money and awareness for the charity.

He said: "As a breast cancer surgeon I am only too well aware of the devastating impact of the disease on thousands of women across the Lothians. I do everything I can to help on a daily basis but we need new treatments to ensure more women can survive.

"By asking people to sponsor me, we can help continue funding Scotland's only dedicated breast cancer research unit - where I also work.

"This research will help ensure that people diagnosed can have a future free from the fear of breast cancer."
