Surfers join mass clean-up of beaches

SURFERS have joined forces in East Lothian as part of a mass beach clean.

Around 30 people linked up with the UK-wide Surfers Against Sewage National Spring Beach Clean, now in its 20th year.

More than 30 bags of rubbish were collected from Belhaven Bay, East Beach, Dunbar and Whitesands.

The event was hosted by Dunbar surf school, Coast to Coast surf school, and Belhaven Surf club.

Sam Christopherson of Coast to Coast said: "It's shocking how much plastic we found this year on the Dunbar beaches and I would encourage all consumers to buy cardboard or glass whenever possible, and recycle.

"We are keen to educate from grassroots and through our daily surf school lessons with kids and adults we will support SAS's UK-wide initiative.

"We encourage all of our surfers to take one item of rubbish off the beach each time they have surfed."

The group collected items including three plastic oil containers, metal railings, footballs, golf balls and shoes.
