Sturgeon welcomes medics' bonus review

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has welcomed the announcement of a UK-wide review of a controversial bonus scheme for top consultants.

The payments of up to 76,000 a year to senior doctors, many of whom are on six-figure salaries, have already been frozen in Scotland.

Ms Sturgeon said: "I have made clear my view that the current system of consultant distinction awards should be reformed so we can achieve a fairer and more cost-effective method of rewarding excellence across the NHS.

"The Scottish Government will be putting forward evidence to the Doctors and Dentists Review Body, which will be carrying out the review on behalf of the UK administrations."
