Students hit by hardship

NEW figures on student hardship are "worrying but no surprise", according to Edinburgh West Liberal Democrat MSP Margaret Smith.

An NUS report found 62 per cent of students said a lack of money damaged studies and that 61 per cent worry frequently or all the time about money.

Ms Smith said: "The vast majority of Scottish students worry about their finances and of those who manage to find part time employment, many are working long hours. This is not good for their studies and will not inspire young people to further their education.

"Liberal Democrats have long advocated progress towards a minimum income guarantee for students. The Scottish Government must face up to the serious consequences of the financial hardship students are struggling with."
