Student says nomination got him job

A CITY student has hailed his nomination for a top prize at the Oscars of the design world as a “huge achievement” that helped kickstart his career.

Steven Brown, who studied HND visual communication (graphic design) at Edinburgh’s Telford College, made the shortlist for this year’s D&AD Student Yellow Pencil Awards for his creative installation for Coutts private banking.

But it is not the first time Steven, from Leith, has found himself up for a top award this year – the 28-year-old clinched top prize at the Marketing
Society’s Star Awards.

He said: “Although I didn’t win, I see the nomination as a huge achievement in itself and this, alongside my Marketing Society Award, helped me get a foothold on the career ladder – landing me my first full-time job in the industry.”

Steven has now taken the position of junior designer with digital agency HeeHaw.
