Enterprise minister Jim Mather said that the move would boost Scotland's business and education profile on the "global stage".

Many universities have been expanding overseas student places and opening campuses in India and the Middle East.

Alastair Sim, director of Universities Scotland, said: "Higher education is a truly global market and Scotland's universities have always had a strong international focus.

"Universities are amongst Scotland's leading service sector exporters, because of the numbers of international students that come to study in Scotland and because of the in-country provision we offer around the world."

Mr Sim added: "A degree from one of Scotland's universities is internationally renowned and highly sought after even in countries such as India, China and the Middle East which are investing heavily in their own higher education."
