Stott to have a ball as new face of Scotsport

EVENING News columnist Grant Stott said today he was thrilled to be returning to TV as the new face of STV's Scotsport.

The Forth One DJ will join ex-Celtic star Andy Walker for the flagship football show, which is the longest-running sports programme in the world.

The 39-year-old Hibs fan was confirmed in the post today, ending days of speculation over whether he had got the job - which had been left vacant following the desertion of veteran Jim Delahunt to rivals Setanta.

Stott's brother John Leslie was also reported to be in the running for the presenter's slot and a host of other heavyweight presenters had been linked with the role.

Stott said today: "It's all a bit of a blur at the moment, but I'm absolutely delighted to have been chosen for the Scotsport job. It really is just unbelievable.

"I'm still trying to get my head around it, but I'm sure it will sink in when I hear that famous theme tune on the first day of filming. I knew I was in the running for the job but I couldn't say anything about it in case it jeopardised my chances. I only found out last night, so it still doesn't seem real at all.

"But I'm really thrilled to be presenting Scotsport. Taking over the reins from broadcasting greats such as Arthur Montford, Jim White and Jim Delahunt is an exciting prospect and an absolute privilege. I can't wait to get on to the set."

It will be his first TV role for nine years, following stints on children's shows Wemyss Bay 902101 and Fully Booked, which he co-presented with Edinburgh-born star Gail Porter.

He added: "I've not been on TV for a while, but you couldn't ask for a better job to come back with. I'd always hoped I'd get back into it at some point, so this is really a dream opportunity for me.

"The only trouble is that the first show is going to feature the next Hearts vs Hibs match - so it will either be the most fantastic or most painful day of my career, depending on what the result is."

The Leith-based DJ joined Forth One in 1990 and returned to the station in 1998, after his spell on TV screens. He currently presents the morning show, which he will continue to do alongside his new role.

Co-presenter Andy Walker, who has played for clubs such as Motherwell, Celtic, Bolton and Sheffield United, has been a regular guest on Scotsport for the past five years.

He said: "I'm delighted to be involved in what is a new era for the programme. Grant is a top bloke and I'm really looking forward to working with him."

Henry Eagles, head of sport at STV, added: "Bringing in a fantastic new presenting team has given us the opportunity to refresh the show. Grant and Andy work brilliantly together on-screen and bring with them a wealth of broadcasting and football experience. It's a winning combination which we're confident viewers will enjoy."

Stott's first episode of Scotsport will be aired on October 16 at 11pm.
