Stornoway castle fire breaks out again

Fire crews were called to the fifth fire in eight days in the tinder-dry Lews castle grounds in Stornoway.

On Saturday night two fire engines tackled an area of burning grass. The alarm was raised after 9pm.

It followed a major blaze in the woods in the castle grounds which saw nearly 100 volunteer firefighters in action on Thursday and Friday. Most of them were fighting the flames and sporadic hot-spots which flared up over a 24-hour period.

Other rural fire crews were put ono stand by for other emergencies.

At its height a 200 metre-long front of flames raged out of control, fanned by the strong north easterly wind.
