Stolen designer goods worth £140k found in Borders

A POLICE raid on a house in the Scottish borders has uncovered more than £140,000 of clothing belonging to a high-profile designer leather company.

Lothian and Borders Police raided the address earlier this month, where they are understood to have found three rooms, including the attic space, filled with stock apparently belonging to Aero Leather.

The Galashiels-based company specialises in bespoke, hand-made vintage jackets, which much sought-after around the world, with celebrities such as Bond star Daniel Craig, musician Dave Grohl and actor Johnny Depp among their customers.

Among the items seized were more than 100 leather jackets, which retail at an average price of £650, and more than 150 pairs of jeans worth £215 each.

Their jackets have also appeared in numerous films, including Inception, Captain America and Empire of the Sun. Most recently, the company was asked to produce a period bomber jacket for Hollywood A-lister George Clooney to wear in the World War II film The Monuments Men.

A Lothian and Borders police spokesman said: “On Monday 4th March, officers attended at an address in Hawick, as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected stolen goods.

“Around £144,000 worth of leather jackets, jeans, and other items of clothing were discovered within the address, and enquiries are ongoing in relation to the seizure.” No arrests have been made.

Aero was established at the end of the 1970s by veteran designer Ken Calder, who, during a career stretching five decades, has made jackets and clothing for the The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Faces, Suzi Quatro and Stephen Stills, When contacted, Calder declined to comment on the seizure. A source close to Aero said last night: “Ken and his staff were completely shocked by this discovery. They’re a small family company, so this represents an huge amount of money to them, though from what I understand I think there’s a lot of stuff that is still missing.”
