Steel work collapse kills four

Four men were killed in an industrial accident at a North Sea engineering firm, police have confirmed.

The workers suffered fatal injuries when a steel structure fell on to them, according to reports last night.

Emergency services were called to Claxton Engineering in Great Yarmouth just before 2:30pm yesterday. The firm also has premises in Aberdeen, but it was not known whether any Scottish staff were involved in the accident.

Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launched a joint investigation into the deaths.

Det Chief Inspector Neil Luckett said: "This is a tragic event and we will be working closely with the HSE to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. This may be a lengthy process."

Norfolk Constabulary said officers were in the process of informing family members.

Police said the four men were working on the site, where the offshore engineering company is based.

A spokesman for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said nine crews, including urban search and research units, attended to help police.
