Staying fit in winter

Graeme Hilditch, a nutrition expert and personal trainer, and Christine Mitchell, of Weight Watchers, say there are plenty of ways to stay fit and healthy despite the weather.

• There is no need for expensive fitness equipment at home, simply walking up and down the stairs several times is a good way of getting your heart rate up and burning energy.

• Try to perform 30 minutes of exercise five times a week.

• Make sure your exercise regime consists of something you enjoy, such as walking to the shops, walking the dog, or even dancing while doing the housework.

• Try something new, such as salsa dancing, swimming, fitness classes, or other indoor pursuits like badminton.

• Watch what you eat - a chocolate digestive or Quality Street sweet has 50 to 60 calories and it's easy to eat ten in one sitting.
