Dubbed the ‘Dark Barrel Latte’, the drink has been compared to Guinness, and is described by the coffee chain as a ‘blend of espresso, dark caramel and chocolatey stout’.

The drink, which won’t be available in the UK, comes in a frappuccino form as well, but doesn’t contain beer or alcohol despite its flavour.

Early reviews of the drink have been mixed, with comments ranging from ‘Could be really good, or awful’ to ‘Maybe I should start drinking coffee’.

However, @noelwoodss on Twitter warned against buying the beverage in the morning: “The dark barrel latte at Starbucks literally tastes like drinking a Guinness in the early morning... So yuck.”

The coffee’s tasting notes described the drink as having a ‘roasted malt flavour’.

Starbucks introduces a range of ‘seasonal’ drinks from Autumn onwards, including the Pumpkin Spice Latte, Mint Hot Chocolate and Vanilla Spice Latte.

A spokesperson for the company said that the new drink had been ‘inspired by the rise of craft beers’.
