Cyprus police said yesterday the 22-year-old fell and hit his head after partying too hard at an exclusive resort on the island.

A police spokeswoman said Mr Wookey was on holiday with friends in the south-western resort of Aphrodite Hills, in Kouklia, nine miles from the city of Paphos, when the accident happened.

It is thought he was there with his friends to celebrate the end of their time at university.

He was found unconscious at 10:30am on Wednesday morning outside the flat where he was staying.

The spokeswoman added: “He was on holiday with other students. We tried to find out how he came to be unconscious.

“We found out he had drunk too many drinks – beer and whisky. He fell, and when he fell down he hit his head and injured himself very seriously.”
