Scotland’s leading animal welfare charity was alerted last Thursday night after a member of the public spotted the female collie cross tied to a lamppost on a walkway connecting Castlehill Road with the Morrisons carpark.

The dog, thought to be around five years old, is now in the care of the SSPCA’s Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre, where she has been named Fly.

Inspector Kerry Kirkpatrick said: “Fly is suffering from a severe skin condition which has resulted in her losing a lot of hair. She is also underweight and she was covered in fleas when she was found. In addition, the vet advised she has recently had pups.

“Fly would have been in a great deal of pain and discomfort but thankfully she’s now receiving the treatment needs. Understandably, Fly was very frightened initially but she’s since come around and she’s proving to be a really friendly and affectionate little dog.”

Inspect Kirkpatrick added: “There is a bus stop opposite the walkway so it’s possible someone saw Fly being tied up but didn’t think there was anything suspicious about this at the time. We’re asking anyone with information to get in touch as we are keen to trace the person responsible for dumping Fly in such awful condition.

“Once Fly has made a full recovery we’ll find her the loving home she deserves.”

An SSPCA spokeswoman said: “Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life. Anyone with information is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.”
