Sports inspirations honoured at school

THE Capital's sporting heroes have been honoured at a special awards ceremony at Broughton High School.

Silver medal-winning boxer Josh Taylor joined fellow athletes and medal-winners newly returned from the Commonwealth Games in Delhi for the event.

They included Michael Jamieson, who won silver in the 200m breaststroke; Steven Simmons, bronze medallist 91g boxing; and team cycling sprint silver-medallists Jenny Davis and Charline Joiner. Also in attendance were stars of local sports clubs and teams.

Councillor Deidre Brock, the city's leisure leader, presented the Volunteer of the Year Award after giving the opening address at the ceremony.

She said: "These sports awards are a tremendous opportunity for us to celebrate the achievements of Edinburgh's sports volunteers, coaches, clubs and athletes.

"Each of these individuals is making an invaluable contribution towards our aim to make Edinburgh the most physically active city in Europe by 2020."
