Spine cancer prognosis project tested

A PROJECT has been tested in the Lothians to improve the prognosis for patients with cancer in their spine.

Is it hoped the pilot will lead to medics being able to diagnose a spread to the spinal cord quicker, which could be the difference between being able to walk and being wheelchair-bound.

Under the initiative, a patient suspected to have the condition will be admitted to a specialist cancer centre with a specific co-ordinator rather than through the normal hospital route.

It has been funded by Macmillan Cancer Support.

Jackie Whigham, project manager for malignant spinal cord compression, said: "A patient who is detected early while mobile has a greater chance of maintaining their mobility and quality of life.

"The South East Scotland Cancer Network provides a seamless process to investigate the suspicious malignant spinal cord compression and put the right treatment in place quickly."

The process also allows the patient to find out test results quicker, and puts their GP in closer contact with experts so prompt advice can be received.
