South-east tram line 'would be a shot in arm'

BUILDING a tram line to the south-east of the Capital would help unlock "significant economic development" in the area, according to a new report.

A report commissioned by the city council found improving transport links with the south-east of the city would provide a vital shot in the arm for the area.

However, talk of reviving plans for tram line 3 to the Royal Infirmary are likely to raise eyebrows, with line 1 mired in contractual difficulties.

The report was commissioned by the city council in partnership with Scottish Enterprise, Edinburgh University, NHS Lothian and tram firm TIE.

It concludes that additional public transport would be required to "maximise the area's potential".
