Son ‘finds his mother and girlfriend’ dying after road accident

A MAN went to the scene of a fatal road accident and found that the victims were his mother and girlfriend, according to an off-duty nurse who tried to save their lives.

Abby Hucknall, 18, and Jane MacDonald, 37, were on the Dunnikier Way road, in Kirkcaldy, Fife, when they were struck by a black Land Rover Discovery at about 6:30pm on Tuesday.

Miss Hucknall was described by her family last night as a “bubbly, caring and beautiful girl”. Ms MacDonald was believed to be the mother of Miss Hucknall’s boyfriend.

Sam Clark, 35, an off-duty staff nurse who had been driving ahead of the Land Rover, told how she saw the incident and rushed to help.

She said: “I was in the car in front. I saw the impact in my rearview mirror and stopped the car. I told my two kids to stay in the car and I went to phone an ambulance. I didn’t see where they came from, but I saw the impact and the girls being hit by the car. They seemed to be hit simultaneously. The Land Rover stopped very quickly.”

Ms Clark said she performed CPR until ambulances arrived at the scene. She added: “The woman’s son was here as well and he was very upset. I was trying to console him as well – he was trying to get his mum to sit up. It was a horrible situation to be in.

“The driver of the Land Rover was very distressed. There were five guys in the car and they were all very distressed. They weren’t speeding.”

Miss Hucknall and Ms MacDonald were pronounced dead at Victoria Infirmary, Kirkcaldy.

Miss Hucknall’s family paid tribute to her in a statement released through Fife Constabulary last night. It said: “Abby’s family are devastated by this tragic loss. She was a very bubbly, caring and beautiful girl, a much-loved daughter, sister and granddaughter who will be sorely missed by all who knew her.”

Miss Hucknall lived with her boyfriend in a flat overlooking the scene of the tragedy. Neighbour David Anderson, 26, said: “She was just a quiet girl. I looked out my window and just saw all the flashing blue lights. There were a lot of people.

“The ambulance men were trying to give them CPR. The Land Rover was nearby.

“Abby’s partner was there, too. He was on the floor, distraught.”

Wendy Logan, 41, has campaigned for the speed limit to be lowered after her son Gordon, ten, was killed at the same spot by a speeding driver in 2004. She said: “It’s beyond belief that it has happened again.

“I’ve petitioned before for

action on this road. There are so many pedestrians crossing here, they need to lower the speed of cars and perhaps get a permanent speed camera.”

Adrian Annandale, chief superintendent with the Fife Constabulary road department, issued an appeal for witnesses.

He said: “We don’t know the exact movements of the two women who have been tragically killed, but our inquiries are continuing to build that picture.

“At that time of the day, it’s a busy area. There are shops and other commercial premises around about. There would have been a lot of people going from their work.

“It was dark, but the weather conditions were fine and we have no reason to believe the lighting wasn’t working.

“We have had some people come forward already. We would hope there are further witnesses out there.”
