Idyllic Scottish island hideaway belonging to former UK chancellor has come up for sale

The historical property, Frachadil House, is situated in Tobermory, close to the iconic Calgary Bay and beach on the Isle of Mull.

It was the beloved holiday home of Conservative politician Rab Butler, Baron Butler of Saffron Walden, who served as education minister during the Second World War and then later as chancellor of the exchequer, home secretary, deputy prime minister and foreign secretary.

Tthe B-listed mansion, which dates back to the 1600s, was a favourite bolthole for the baron and his second wife Mollie, who purchased it in 1961.

They holidayed at the property for 20 years, often visiting three times a year until Lord Butler died in 1982.

Now the former chancellor’s family has taken the decision to sell Frachadil House, which boasts accommodation over three floors.

In recent times, part of the 10-bedroom house has been successfully let as self-catering accommodation while other rooms were used for guests staying on a bed-and-breakfast basis.

There is also ample scope for development of the property, which is spread over 10 acres, subject to planning consent.

Nicky Archibald, from property consultancy Galbraith, is handling the sale.

She said: “This is a superb island home, benefiting from a very picturesque and tranquil setting, surrounded by delightful grounds with a walled garden and woodland.

“The house itself combines traditional features with superb contemporary interior design, which will appeal to a wide range of purchasers.”
