Somali pirates abandon ship

Somali pirates have fled the hijacked German merchant vessel Beluga Fortune and released its crew without getting a ransom payment, the ship's owner said yesterday, a day after the vessel was taken.

The 16 crew members made a distress call, locked themselves in a safety room, turned off the engines and fuel supply, put the bridge out of action and radioed a Nato navy intelligence plane.
