Soldier dies in quarry fall

A SOLDIER who fell to his death during a rock climbing exercise has been named.

Gordon Brass, 34, plunged 40ft down a quarry in Angus on Friday afternoon.

It is understood that Brass, from Dundee, was a member of an army recruitment team and was with a group of students at the Legaston Quarry at Collieston near Arbroath. Emergency services were called to the climbing spot at about 2.45pm, and paramedics tried to resuscitate the soldier.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed the death, but said no details would be released until after the weekend to allow Brass's family to come to terms with their loss.
