The twins taking part in the study were asked to rate how much obligation they would feel in the following hypothetical situations, on a scale of zero to ten - with zero being no obligation and ten being the highest level of obligation.

Civic obligations

How much obligation would you feel:

a)To serve on a jury if called?

b)To keep fully informed about national news and public issues?

c)To testify in court about an accident you witnessed?

d)To vote in local and national elections?

Work obligations

How much obligation would you feel:

a)To do more than most people would do on your kind of job?

b)To work hard even if you didn't like or respect your employer or supervisor?

c) To cancel plans to visit friends if you were asked, but not required, to work overtime?

Welfare obligations

How much obligation would you feel:

a) To pay more for your health care so that everyone had access to health care?

b) To volunteer time or money to social causes you support?

c) To collect contributions for heart or cancer research if asked to do so?

d) To vote for a law that would help others worse off than you but would increase your taxes?

Rating

The higher the score, the "nicer" you are, so check your score against The Scotsman's scale:

100-110 Either you're fibbing or you're a saint.

70-99 Nice one.

40-69 Naughty but nice.

11-39 Naughty, naughty.

0-10 Oooo, you are awful.
