Snow forecast sets off weather warning

Weather warnings have been issued by forecasters as more snow is expected to fall across large parts of the country today.

The Met Office said strong winds could lead to blizzard-like conditions, particularly over higher areas in the north, with the public told to prepare for possible disruption to travel.

Amber “be prepared” alerts were issued for parts of the Highlands, Grampian, Strathclyde, Central, Tayside, Fife, south-west Scotland and Lothian and Borders for Friday morning into the early hours of Saturday.

Forecasters said four to eight centimetres (6in) are likely to fall quite widely in the amber warning areas, with a low risk of more than 10cm locally – even on lower ground. Further north, 10 to 20cm could fall on higher ground.
