Six injured as bus hits phone box

Six people were taken to hospital yesterday after a bus crashed into a telephone box.

The collision, in the Calderwood area of East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, happened at about 1:30pm.

Firefighters rescued the bus driver by using cutting equipment to make space within the vehicle. He is believed to have sustained head injuries.

He was taken by ambulance to the East Kilbride’s Hairmyres Hospital for treatment.

Five passengers were taken to the same hospital for a precautionary check-up, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue officials said.

None of the passengers was believed to have been seriously injured.

Two crews from East Kilbride Community Fire Station attended the incident.

Nearby roads were closed for a short period.
