The two police officers who were in the van at the time - both male - and three occupants of the car, also male, were taken to hospital but later released.

Northern Constabulary said in a statement that the police van did not collide with the pedestrian and had not been involved in a pursuit at the time of the accident. A police spokesman added: "As with all collisions involving police vehicles the matter will be fully investigated."
