Sister hits out after Edinburgh woman's murder probe closed twice

The sister of an Edinburgh woman who died under mysterious circumstances in India has blasted investigators after a murder investigation into the matter has been dropped - twice.

Denyse Sweeney died aged 34 in Goa in 2010, with local police saying she had overdosd on drugs, however a UK-based inquest found no trace of drugs in her system and instead noted around 20 unexplained marks on her body.

She had initially been found in a distressed state by a friend near a nightclub in the Anjuna region, and was taken to hospital but was then declared dead less than an hour later.

With the case initially reopened four years after her death, investigators in India are now looking to once again close the case, saying Ms Sweeney died from fluid on the brain.

But her family say they have proven repeatedly that no drugs were found in Denyse’s system.

Ms Sweeney’s sister, Maureen, told the Daily Express: “I know she was murdered. She was hit over the head with a rock or a boulder. We knew this from day one. We were told by tourists, by her friends, we’ve had various reports from the police; ‘Yes it did happen’, ‘no it didn’t happen’. We are just getting conflicting stories all over the place.

“Apart from crying in the corner I don’t know what else to do. I don’t think I will ever get the Indian authorities to tell me the truth.”
