Sir Jim fixes it for Transplant Games to get under way

THE British Transplant Games opened in Edinburgh yesterday with a parade along Princes Street finishing at the Ross Bandstand in Princes Street Gardens.

Television presenter Sir Jimmy Savile, pictured with Edinburgh brother and sister Frank and Monica Clarke, who have both had kidney transplants and are competing, took part in the ceremony.

Around 600 athletes are taking part in sporting events including swimming, cycling and sprinting at city venues until Sunday. Sir Jimmy declared the games open after a welcome speech by Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon.

Sir Jimmy was present to open the first British Transplant Games in Portsmouth in 1978.

Events including swimming, cycling and sprinting will take place at venues throughout the city and more than 2000 people are expected to visit the city to support the athletes and join in the festivities.
