Siege man ran at police with knife

A MAN who sparked a four-hour siege after stabbing himself with a knife has been ordered to carry out 12 months' probation.

Police officers were called to a flat in Dalry at around 5:30pm on August 5 last year, and when they got there Denim MacLeod ran at them with a knife, Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard yesterday. Caledonian Place had to be sealed off as officers, paramedics and police dogs took up positions outside the tenement flat.

It was not until almost 10pm that officers were able to coax the 28-year-old out of the building and he was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

MacLeod, of Caledonian Place, admitted conducting himself in a disorderly manner, running at police officers while brandishing a knife and breaching the peace.

Sheriff James Scott told MacLeod there were "unusual elements" to the case and that probation was suitable.
