Siege at flats as man in 'explosion threat'

POLICE have arrested a man following a stand-off at a Leith flat in which he was alleged to have threatened to blow himself up.

The 28-year-old was taken into custody following the hour-long emergency on Buchanan Street which began at around 6pm on Saturday.

Squads of riot police entered the cordon during the stand-off armed with shields. The man bundled into a police van just before 7pm.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "A 28-year-old male has been arrested and been taken in to custody. He will appear in court on Monday."

News of this siege comes a day after police swooped on a man allegedly wielding a knife at a block of flats at Tinto Place in Bonnington. A 38-year-old man was detained.
