Shot US soldier stood by friend

A WOUNDED soldier refused to leave a fallen comrade as a gunman fired shots during last year's deadly rampage at the Fort Hood army post in Texas, a military court heard yesterday.

Specialist Alan Carroll said he had been shot in the arm but as soon as he realised the chaos around him was not a training exercise he concentrated on helping a more seriously wounded fellow soldier and friend.

The Article 32 hearing, a proceeding unique to military law, will determine if Maj. Nidal Hasan, 40, should stand trial in the Fort Hood shootings. Hasan, an American of Palestinian descent, is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder.
