Shop loses booze licence

A NEWSAGENT has paid the price after twice selling alcohol to under-18s.

The Premier Store in Broomhouse has lost its licence to serve alcohol for a year, considerably longer than the owner was expecting.

Councillors at yesterday's licensing board meeting left the room to discuss the fate of the shop, run by Tahir Jahid. They had been told by police how the shop failed two test-purchasing examinations, where officers send in a 16-year-old to buy alcohol.

Alistair MacDonald, acting for the store, said since the two failures the store had improved its CCTV coverage and introduced a scheme to challenge for identification anyone who appeared to be under 25. He had recommended a month's suspension.
