Sherlock forced to face up to problem of the Time Lord

Doctor Who star Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch, from Sherlock, have been nominated for best drama performance at the National Television Awards.

Philip Glenister also competes for the title, for his role in Ashes to Ashes, as does five times National Television Awards winner David Jason for A Touch of Frost.

The two BBC1 dramas have been shortlisted for best drama, against rivals Shameless (Channel 4) and BBC1 school series Waterloo Road.

X Factor host Dermot O'Leary will be up for his first National Television Award for best entertainment presenter at the ceremony on 26 January. He will compete against Britain's Got Talent stars Ant and Dec, Davina McCall, who presented the final Big Brother last year, and Paul O'Grady, the host of Paul O'Grady Live.

X Factor and Britain's Got Talent compete for the talent show category against Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing on Ice.

Coronation Street is up for best serial after its 50th anniversary, against EastEnders.
