Seminar puts students in driving seat

A ROAD safety seminar aimed at improving the driving skills of new and learner motorists has helped around 1200 high school students from the Lothians.

The 2moro's Driver event was led by Lothian and Borders Police with help from Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service, Lothian and Borders Safety Camera Partnership, and the British Red Cross. Hundreds of students from 12 high schools across East and Midlothian attended the series of events held at the Brunton Hall in Musselburgh earlier this month.

As well as theatre performances highlighting the importance of safe driving, students heard first-hand accounts from police and fire officers who have experience of attending fatal collisions. A mother who lost her son in a road accident also gave a personal account of the grief she and her family have experienced.

Chief Superintendent Mark Williams said: "The account given by the lady whose son was killed in a road accident, coupled with inputs from police and fire officers, had a thought-provoking effect on students and staff."
