Selkirk youngsters hoping picnic will light blue touchpaper on fund-raising

Selkirk youngsters have organised a summer picnic to be held on Sunday, August 12 (2-5pm), at The Haining.

Tickets are available from the Scott’s Selkirk shop.

The event is part of fund-raising in order to stage a fireworks night within the grounds of Haining House on Saturday, November 3.

As it is the Year of the Young Person, Rowlands, an alcohol-free bar that acts as a community hub for young people in Selkirk, has been working closely with Scott’s Selkirk and The Haining to organise the fireworks event.

Charlie Dawson, of Rowlands, said: “The aim of the fireworks is to hopefully reduce the amount of small displays within Selkirk and to have a large event free for the community. We will be also doing fire safety and responsibility with our young people who attend Rowlands, as well as other activities in the run-up to the actual event .

“A core group of our young people have been working hard to gain funding for the fireworks and as part of the money-raising have organised a summer picnic with face-painting, music, games and an afternoon tea.”

The youngsters are also organising a fireworks-theme poster competition open to all children across the Borders.

There are four age groups – P1-4, P5-7, S1-4 and over 15. Entries – with the entrant’s name, age and contact number on the back – should be handed in at the Scott’s Selkirk shop or Rowlands by Friday,August 10. The posters will be on display at the picnic and open to public vote on that day. The winner from each age category will have their artwork on display across the Borders.
