Security review for all science premises

THE SPSA has launched a review of security at all its laboratories after it emerged that the Howdenhall Road premises were protected only by CCTV and alarms, with no security guards.

Labour justice spokesman Richard Baker also called on Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill to launch his own investigation.

He said: "This is a deeply concerning attack on the justice system and one that needs to be dealt with urgently. The people behind this attack need to be brought to justice and Kenny MacAskill should order a full security review."

There have been suggestions that the attack was linked to a find of a gun, drugs and a four-figure sum of cash in the Inch during a police operation last week.

Chief Inspector John Rae said: "If you speak to people in the Inch they'll tell you that rumour has it's linked to the find last week – that the people responsible are so worried they tried to destroy the evidence.

"Whoever it was, they were determined to mount an attack, so it was quite clearly specifically targeted."
