Search of River Annan called off

POLICE and emergency services have stood down a search for a person believed to have fallen into a swollen river.

Police officers, coastguard and mountain rescue teams were alerted after a reported sighting of someone falling into the River Annan, in the Everholm area of Annan, Dumfries and Galloway, at about 6.30pm yesterday. Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said boat searches of the river by the Nith inshore lifeboat resumed this morning while a rescue helicopter flew over the area. Nothing was found and police have stood down the search. A force spokesman said there had been no reports of a missing person but the witness who informed police of the incident was credible. A shoreline search from Everholm to the river mouth at Solway was alsoundertaken by police and Moffat Mountain Rescue Team last night. The search could be resumed if police receive new information, the spokesman added.
