Search for two men feared missing on Orkney loch

A MAJOR search is being carried out on Orkney for two missing men who are thought to have gone fishing.

Police, the fire service and coastguard have been joined by members of the local community in the operation around Loch of Boardhouse, near Birsay.

The emergency services were contacted at around 11.30am and searches of the loch area began soon afterwards.

The men are believed to have left an address in Dounby to fish on the loch.

Officers are currently in the process of informing relatives of the missing men.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they had been involved in the operation and sent two crews to the scene.

A spokesman said: “We assisted fellow emergency partners today with a search for two missing people.

“We were alerted by police at 1.34pm to reports that the men, who were believed to have been fishing the area around Loch of Boardhouse, had not been seen for some time.

“We sent two fire and rescue crews from Stromness who assisted police and coastguard personnel.

“Our crews left the scene shortly after 3pm.”
