Andy Murray crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year
For the second time in three years, Andy Murray has taken the top spot in the BBC’s yearly sports personality poll. The two-time Grand Slam and one-off Wimbledon winner received 35 per cent of the votes cast, beating rugby league player Kevin Sinfield (28 per cent) and heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill, who garnered 20 per cent less votes than Sinfield.
Elsewhere during the awards ceremony, presenter and TV pundit Gary Lineker managed to cut his hand on the trophy, while boxer Tyson Fury apologised for offensive remarks he previously made to the LGBT community.
Madonna criticises Glasgow Hydro after power turned off

Staff at the Hydro hit back after the singer appeared to criticise the venue on Instagram and said the American star’s own production team was responsible for the power cut.
SNP lead Labour in polls despite bridge criticism
Despite the continuing political fracas over the Forth Road Bridge, a TNS-derived poll of over 1,000 over-16s has given the SNP a lead over Labour ahead of next year’s Holyrood election.
Support for the Nicola Sturgeon-led party has increased by two points to 54 per cent in the regional list election. The Greens also saw support rise by four per cent, and the Scottish Conservatives saw an increase of one per cent, with the Liberal Democrats seeing a small dip in support.
Runaway reindeer bolts from Tesco festive event
Residents in Nottingham were startled to see a reindeer galloping down the street on Sunday afternoon after it broke free from a Christmas-themed event at a local Tesco supermarket.
Bjorn the reindeer was caught after ten minutes of frantic pursuit, with event organisers The Animal Company eventually coaxing the animal back into its enclosure. It is thought that the sound of a car horn startled the animal into making an ill-advised break for freedom.
Scottish ‘Harry Potter railway’ experiences hike in popularity
A railway journey crowned as the world’s most scenic is ScotRail’s fastest-growing route, thanks largely to its role in the Harry Potter films.
Passenger numbers have risen by approximately 14 per cent in 2014-15, and a school service transporting pupils from Dalmally, Taynuilt and Connel to Oban is also thought to have contributed to the increase.
