Stranraer train station: Potential plans to relocate Stranraer rail station unveiled
The recent review has examined three potential locations for a new station closer to the town.
Network Rail has outlined potential plans for a new railway station in Stranraer, relocating it from the “remote” former ferry terminal to nearer the town centre.

The rail body carried out a feasibility study to assess the potential relocation of the station, which is currently positioned at the end of a harbour pier about 15 minutes walk from the town centre.
It comes after years of campaigning from the community.
7N Architects, the firm which completed the study, said the proposals would transform the station “from a remote facility into a vibrant gateway” that reconnects the town.

Network Rail said that since the relocation of the ferry terminal to Cairnryan in 2011, the station has felt remote from the town centre.
The recent review has examined three potential locations for a new station closer to the town, including options situated along Cairnryan Road.
However, the rail body stressed the study functioned only to scope out potential options, and that no funding had been confirmed for the relocation.

While Network Rail said it was “supportive” of the proposals, it does not have decision-making powers over whether a new station is built or relocated.
A spokesperson for 7N said the designs celebrate Stranraer’s loch-side location and the proposals would act as “catalyst for waterfront regeneration”.
A spokesperson for Network Rail Scotland said: “Stranraer’s rail connection plays a vital role in supporting local communities, tourism and sustainable travel.
“That’s why we're supportive of ongoing work to explore relocating the station to a site that better serves passengers and sits closer to the town.
“With funding from Transport Scotland, we have now completed a feasibility study examining three potential locations for a future station.
“We will continue to work closely with Stena Line, as a key landowner and partner, and Dumfries & Galloway Council as next steps are considered.”
