Scottish fact of the week: Loch Morar

SCOTLAND is famous for its lochs, and Morar is amongst the most impressive. A depth of 310m makes Loch Morar the deepest body of freshwater in Britain, and the third deepest in Europe.

But the depth of the water isn’t the only thing Morar is famous for, as reports have been made regarding unidentified creatures in the loch.

Legend has it that lurking in the water lies Morag - Scotland’s second most famous ‘loch dwelling beast’. Sightings of Morag date back to 1887, with some witnesses reporting a ‘serpent like creature’ around ‘20ft long’.

Expeditions have been launched to discover the truth behind these reports, but no evidence has been found.

Whether or not Morag exists remains to be seen, but there are plenty of confirmed species of wildlife to call Loch Morar home as it is - from otters to sea eagles, salmon to trout.
