Scotsman writers on the shortlist at press awards

SCOTSMAN Publications has received 19 nominations across its three titles in the Scottish Press Awards shortlist.

The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday dominated the Magazine Writer of the Year shortlist, with four out of the five nominations coming from the titles, including Catherine Deveney and Peter Ross for the Scotland on Sunday, and Chitra Ramaswamy and Aidan Smith for Scotsman Publications.

Peter Ross received a nomination for Newspaper Feature Writer of the Year, while The Scotsman's Literary Editor David Robinson is in the running for Arts/Entertainment Journalist of the Year. Scotland on Sunday's Tom English was named in the nominations for Sports Feature Writer of the Year.

The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday's political editor Eddie Barnes and Scottish political correspondent David Maddox were both nominated for Political Journalist of the Year.

Mr Barnes was also nominated for Scoop of the Year for his front page story in March last year that revealed Glasgow City Council was preparing to announce that its former leader Steven Purcell was suffering from a "chemical dependency", but was overruled at the last moment.

The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday senior business writer Erikka Askeland has been nominated for Business Journalist of the Year, while Executive Editor Bill Jamieson has been listed for Columnist of the Year. Several Scotsman publication photographers received nominations: Phil Wilkinson for News Photographer of the Year, for his picture of First Minister Alex Salmond's visit to the Tunnock's factory; and Ian Rutherford and Robert Perry for Sports Photographer of the Year.

Scotland on Sunday's Brian Adcock has been nominated for Cartoonist of the Year, along with Frank Boyle of the Edinburgh Evening News.

Other Edinburgh Evening News nominations were Victoria Raimes for Young Journalist of the Year, and Adam Morris for Journalist Team of the Year.

The awards, which take place in Glasgow on 21 April, are supported by the Scottish Newspaper Society, BAE Systems, Sound+Vision, 3x1 Public Relations, Grand Central Hotel, Clydesdale Bank, Event Consultants Scotland, Royal Mail, and SPD Print Solutions.
