Scots woman loses £24,000in Euro Lottery con trick

AN ELDERLY woman from Aberdeen has been conned out of £24,000 in a lottery scam.

The victim, in her seventies, was persuaded to hand over the money after being told she had won a fortune in the Euromillions Lottery.

Inspector Roddy MacInnes, of Grampian Police, said she had been the victim of a highly soph-isticated scam, which involved her parting with the money in two instalments after receiving a letter saying she had won a substantial prize. She phoned a number, where a smooth-talking man persuaded her to make the payments into nominated accounts to get her prize.

Insp MacInnes said: "The second payment was used as payment for vehicle parts sent to another part of the world, which, in turn, were sold on by the criminals."

He added: "This is another example of someone being caught out by what they think is a genuine letter. The woman only realised she had been scammed after her bank contacted her."
