Scots on ‘waiting list’ to adopt dogs from Spain

DOG lovers in Scotland are on “waiting lists” to adopt dogs from Spain that are dumped or slaughtered at the end of the hunting season.

The hunting dogs, mainly Spanish greyhounds, known as “Galgos”, and “Podenco breeds”, live with their hunter owners on camps and are used to catch wild animals or compete in coursing events. But up to 50,000 are abandoned every spring, many left to die by being hung from trees.

Protesters in Spain are putting pressure on their government to rescue the dogs.

The Scottish Greyhound Sanctuary has agreed to take in three rescue dogs to be fostered and rehoused. Dozens more have been reserved by individual dog owners.
