Foreign and Commonwealth Office staff confirmed they were helping his family with the incident.

Mark's devastated family were too upset to speak yesterday.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Cyprus on July 10.

"Next of kin are aware and we are providing consular assistance to them."

Councillor Bryan Stewart, who represents the Inverurie area, described it as "very sad" news.

He said: "There do tend to be a lot of Scots fatalities abroad, which is a bit disturbing.

"But for a young lad it's very sad."

And fellow councillor Richard Cowling added: "This tragedy brings home to people that even though we go on holiday to have a good time, there are terrible things that can occur such as this incident involving a young lad.

"My thoughts are with the family."
