Ross Cowan, 30 and his wife Carole Annie Cowan, 27, from Helensburgh, were on holiday on the Côte d’Azur and were taking part in the Bastille Day celebrations in Nice.

Mrs Cowan’s sister Amy Stanton, 25, had been unable to get in contact with the couple since an hour before a lorry ploughed into crowds of people on the Promenade des Anglais, killing 84 and wounding dozens.

Ms Stanton had posted appeals on Facebook and had contacted the Foreign Office.

But she later posted on her Facebook page that the couple, who had been travelling through France and staying at campsites, were safe.

Ms Stanton said: “They are fine. They left Nice to travel overnight while it was quiet.

“They heard gunshots in the distance and thought it was something to do with the fireworks.

“They were not able to contact us because they had no signal. They did not even know there had been an incident.

“I can’t tell you how relieved we are. I just think we are so lucky compared to all the other families affected by this.”
