Scotmid hits 150-year high

THE Edinburgh convenience store chain Scotmid has broken its previous record trading profit in the year of its 150th anniversary.

The Newbridge-headquartered firm saw operating profits rise by 18 per cent to 10.2 million in the year to 31 January.

The food part of the business was said to be particularly strong, while it continued to expand its Semichem business with 15 new stores mainly in the north of England.

However, chief executive John Brodie said: "Despite these good results, there is no doubt 2010 will be a challenging year."
