Scotland’s weather: Snow set to cause disruption

COMMUTERS are facing disruption on Scotland’s road network this morning after snow showers hit several parts of the country overnight.

Snow ploughs and gritters have been working through the night to clear routes in the north west.

The snow gates on the A82 Tyndrum to Glencoe road have been shut and police said conditions on the A86 Spean Bridge to Roy Bridge road were poor.

In the Borders there was an accident on the A7 by Stow which has been affected by black ice. Nobody was injured in the collision.

A band of rain, sleet and snow is forecast for parts of southern Scotland this morning, particularly in Dumfries and Galloway and the Lothians.

High winds are expected in the Borders, Dumfries and Galloway and East Lothian.

A spokeswoman for BEAR Scotland, which maintains Scotland’s trunk roads, said: “Snow continues to make driving conditions difficult particularly on high sections of the A82, A83, A85, A87 and A9.

“The snow gates are currently closed on the A82 between Glencoe and Tyndrum due to drifting snow and we have four winter service vehicles on this section of road ploughing snow and spreading salt. We are liaising with Police Scotland regarding the reopening of the road.

“In total, 42 of our winter service vehicles have been working throughout the night to keep roads throughout the north west clear. The vehicles will continue to monitor routes and treat as necessary until weather and road conditions improve.”
