The forecaster warned of thundery downpours moving north across England during Saturday, with the rain moving into southeast Scotland during the early hours of Sunday. The rain is then expected to clear from the southwest later in the day.

The Met Office website warns of rainfall of up to 50mm in under three hours.

The Met Office chief forecaster’s warning reads: “Although there remains some uncertainty concerning the extent of these heavy showers and thunderstorms, there is an increasing signal for an area of heavy rain with isolated thunderstorms to move north to affect eastern and northern England and southeast Scotland.”

The warning follows widespread thunderstorms this week which disrupted rail services and prompted flash flooding.
