Scot injured during Beijing business trip

A Scot is fighting for his life in a Chinese hospital after suffering serious head wounds during a trip to Beijing.

Gavin Anthony, 28, was rushed to hospital in the Chinese capital after a night out turned to horror.

Gavin, a mortgage advisor with global banking giants HSBC, had been visiting the city promoting business links with the bank.

His family are thought to have flown from their home in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, to be at his bedside.

Foreign office officials have been in contact with his family but it is not thought police have been investigating the incident.

On Tuesday, HSBC confirmed Gavin had been attending business meetings in Beijing when he was injured.

A spokesman said: “An HSBC employee from the UK attending a business meeting in Beijing suffered injuries and is receiving medical care. For reasons of confidentiality we are unable to provide further details.

“HSBC is extending its support and assistance to the member of staff, and is in touch with family members. HSBC wishes for the colleague’s speedy recovery.”

Workers at HSBC’s Hamilton centre where Gavin is based had been kept informed on developments since news of the incident emerged.

A source said: “People were told Gavin had been on a night out with a colleague and then found with a serious head injury.

“His family have flown out to be at his side but it evident everyone is really worried about him.

“Gavin is really popular and well-liked so this news is very upsetting.

“Everyone at the bank is just praying he makes a full recovery.”

Gavin’s LinkedIn page details his career path and says he studied at Kings Park Secondary in Glasgow before attending Glasgow University.

He started working with HSBC in June 2010 and is now a mortgage advisor.

Officials from the Foreign Office confirmed their staff had been providing assistance to Gavin’s family.

An FCO spokeswoman: “We are providing assistance to a British man who has been taken to hospital in

Beijing, China, and are in contact with local authorities.”
