Scientists, artists and artistes head the field in the New Years' honour list

PROFESSOR Ian Wilmut, the man who led the team which created Dolly the Sheep, said he was "delighted and excited" after he was knighted in the New Year's Honours list today.

Prof Wilmut heads a list of Scots honoured by the Queen.

Alison Watt, the artist famed for her female nudes in rooms bathed in light, receives a CBE, as does Aberdeen Football Club chairman and housebuilder Stewart Milne.

Former Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson and two-time snooker world champion John Higgins are both awarded MBEs, while Glasgow-born film producer Iain Smith gets an OBE.

Professor Wilmut, who left the Roslin Institute two years ago to join the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine, receives his knighthood for his groundbreaking scientific work including creating Dolly, the first-ever cloned mammal.

"I'm naturally delighted and excited by this award and accept it on behalf of the teams I work with now at the centre for regenerative medicine at the University of Edinburgh and previously at the Roslin Institute," he said.

"It also recognises the importance of biomedical research to develop new treatments in regenerative medicine."

Watt, a leading figure in the world of British contemporary art, is currently artist in residence at the National Gallery in London where she has a major exhibition opening in spring.

Mr Milne, 57, the majority shareholder of Aberdeen FC, and a leading figure in the building industry in Scotland, was awarded a CBE for his services to the house-building industry. He founded the construction company of the same name in 1975 and saw it become one of the UK's leaders in the field with its workforce growing from 30 to 1,200 and its turnover from 1 million to 348 million.

Mr Milne became a director of Aberdeen Football Club in 1994 and chairman three years later. He was also a founding board member of the Scottish Premier League in 1998.

"I am personally delighted to have received this recognition," he said last night, "but see it as an accolade that belongs to the team around me, my family, the place I grew up in and the people I grew up with – I am delighted to share it with them."

The list of Scotland's knighthoods includes Ian Good, 64, head of The Edrington drinks group and chairman of the Scotch Whisky Association. The Edrington group, whose brands include The Macallan and Famous Grouse, is said to be one of Scotland's biggest private manufacturing companies and exports five million cases a year. Mr Good, a chartered accountant, is also chairman of Hamilton Park racecourse and a steward of the Jockey Club. His is also a board member of the Tote, and was appointed interim chairman of that body earlier this month.

Knighthoods also went to Professor Timothy O'Shea and Professor John Savill, both of Edinburgh University, for services to higher education and clinical science respectively.

Seona Reid, 57, awarded a CBE for services to the creative industries, has been director of Glasgow School of Art since 1999.

Before that, she was director of the Scottish Arts Council for nine years. She is vice-chairman of the Lighthouse Centre for architectural design in Glasgow, serves on several artistic bodies, and has been awarded one honorary professorship and three honorary degrees.

Philip Riddle, the chief executive of VisitScotland, is awarded a CBE for services to the tourist industry. The former Shell oil executive said: "This is a wonderful honour. It is a tremendous acknowledgement of the great amount of work that everyone at VisitScotland has put in and the progress that we have made in recent years."

SNOOKER STAR HIGGINS 'STUNNED' BY AWARD

JOHN Higgins, who has twice won the snooker world championship, said yesterday that he was "stunned" to learn he had been appointed an MBE and was looking forward to his trip to Buckingham Palace.

Mr Higgins, 32, from Wishaw in Lanarkshire, won his second world championship in May, and said he has no plans to retire.

The snooker player celebrated his award with a family trip to the fair in Glasgow. He said: "When I was asked if I'd like to receive an MBE, I was just stunned. As a snooker player you don't expect awards like these.

"I'm just delighted. It's fantastic – a great thing to have. I'm looking forward to the trip to Buckingham Palace now. I'll make sure my wife gets a new dress and hat and it'll be great to take the kids along in kilts."

He will now join fellow players such as Stephen Hendry, Steve Davis, John Parrott and Jimmy White who have all been honoured with MBEs previously, with Davis also becoming an OBE.

Higgins insists the MBE is no indication he is in the twilight of his career.

He said: "There's not many in snooker who have got such an honour.

I don't know if they think I'm going downhill, but I hope I'm not. I plan to be around quite a while longer."

OBE FOR STAR OF SCREEN

RICHARD Griffiths, one of Britain's most celebrated character actors, was awarded an OBE for services to drama.

While his most famous film role remains Uncle Monty in the cult favourite Withnail & I, he is familiar to millions of children the world over as beastly Uncle Vernon in the Harry Potter films.

Griffiths, now 60, was born in Thornaby-on-Tees, North Yorkshire, and grew up caring for his deaf mute parents.

OBE for top film producer

IAIN Smith, the Scottish film producer behind such movies as The Fifth Element and Seven Years in Tibet, which starred Brad Pitt, was appointed an OBE for his services to film.

Born in Glasgow, and educated in film technique in London, Smith, 58, began his career working with the late Bill Douglas on My Childhood, before going on to work with David Puttnam and Hugh Hudson on Chariots of Fire.

He acted as line producer on Local Hero, The Killing Fields and The Mission before then going on to produce Entrapment, starring Sean Connery and Alexander starring Colin Farrell, Anthony Hopkins and Angelina Jolie.

Mr Smith is a board member of the UK Film Council as well as Scottish Screen and was recently appointed to the board of Creative Scotland.

He is currently producing a film called Wanted for Universal Pictures.

Kylie tells of her joy and surprise

KYLIE Minogue's battle against breast cancer inspired millions around the world and her return to the music scene was met with delight by her army of fans.

Now the Australian pop princess's achievements have also been recognised by the Queen with an OBE.

Minogue was among an A-list cast of stars of stage and screen to be honoured in this year's New Year Honours list.

Others include chat-show supremo Michael Parkinson, actress Julie Walters and sports commentator Des Lynam.

Speaking from Australia, where she has been spending Christmas with her family, Minogue, 39, said: "I am almost as surprised as I am honoured to be awarded an OBE.

"I feel deeply touched to be acknowledged by the UK, my adopted home, in this way.

"This last year I have felt so much love and support from everyone as I took greater steps back into the public domain, and it is with absolute gratitude and joy that I say farewell to 2007 and look forward to what the New Year will bring."

Minogue's OBE for services to music seals her reputation as one of pop's most enduring icons after she first hit No 1 in the charts with I Should Be So Lucky almost 20 years ago.

In 2005, fans were shocked by the news that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. But after a year of gruelling treatment, she was back on tour.

Also honoured by the Queen was 72-year-old presenter Parkinson, who received a long-rumoured knighthood.

At its peak, his chat show was watched by 12 million viewers, with guests including Orson Welles, Bob Hope, Muhammad Ali and Rod Hull and his puppet, Emu – who famously attacked the host during the show.

Parkinson's knighthood for services to broadcasting comes just weeks after he retired from his show with a two-hour special featuring some of his favourite guests.

Walters, who first made her name in acting in 1983 with the film Educating Rita, was made a CBE by the Queen for services to drama. The Oscar-nominated actress has also enjoyed roles in films such as Billy Elliot, and played the loveable Mrs Overall in spoof TV soap Acorn Antiques, one of several collaborations with Victoria Wood.

More recently, the 56-year-old has gained younger fans by playing the role of Rob Weasley's mother in the Harry Potter films.

Another honours recipient was veteran sports presenter Des Lynam, who said he was thrilled to be awarded an OBE.

Lynam, 65, has been a sports reporter and presenter since 1969 – for both the BBC and ITV – and was also a presenter of Channel 4's Countdown.

He said: "This has been a splendid surprise and I feel truly privileged."

The presenter is well-known for his memorable one-liners, including this one, at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996: "Going down to the pub is not yet an Olympic sport, but beach volleyball is."

At a wet Wimbledon, he quipped: "This is live rain we are watching, not recorded rain."

The Lord of the Rings star Sir Ian McKellen, 68, becomes a Companion of Honour, while the actor Leslie Phillips, 83, is made an OBE.

Meanwhile, an OBE goes to George Alagiah, the 52-year-old BBC news presenter and reporter, who has covered major world stories.

A CBE is awarded to Brendan Foster, the long-distance runner and founder of the Great North Run, and there is an MBE for the current snooker world champion, John Higgins.

Leading honours in the business world went to Stuart Rose, 58, the man who turned round Marks & Spencer, who receives a knighthood.

CBEs also go to Richard Bradbury, chief executive of the international fashion house River Island, and to Maurice Bennett, who has been involved in the fashion industry for 50 years.

There are OBEs for Jasper Conran, whose first women's wear collection was in 1978, and Karen Millen, founder of the fashion chain bearing her name.
